Featured as another premiere act for the Sydney Sacred Music Festival, "Bhoomi: Woman and Earth" is a beautiful afternoon showcasing sacred music and dance traditions hailing from South India in the courtyard of the historic Old Government House in Parramatta.
Following on from the success of Ātma: Music and Movement (2017) and Bhakti: Art and Devotion (2018) staged for the festival, Arjunan Puveendran and Indu Balachandran produce another installment of their outdoor recital series weaving ancient texts and traditions into the lens of contemporary society. Bhoomi explores themes that are more vital than ever in the modern world — the feminine and the environment.
This recital will draw on a combination of music, dance, spoken word and ritual practice featuring an ensemble of locally grown musicians, dancers, thinkers, writers, and speakers. The setting of old traditions and myths into the contemporary Australian context promises a unique and thought-provoking afternoon under the sun and gum trees in Parramatta Park.
